Gaëtan is a former prisoner released to fight. He meets Isabelle in the woods near Étampes. He shares his rabbit and wine.
The Kiss
They kiss. Isabelle says she loves him. He leaves her at her sister's house with a note: "You are not ready."
The Mystery
Isabelle is hurt and confused. Gaëtan disappears into the war. But he has not forgotten her.
Joining the Resistance

The Communist
Gaëtan is a communist. He joins Paul Lévy's network. He becomes a courier and later a partisan.
Watching Over Isabelle
He has Didier follow Isabelle. He recommends her to Henri. He protects her from afar.
The Reunion
At a meeting in Paris, Gaëtan and Isabelle meet again. He is distant. He does not want to put her in danger.
The Maquis

Guerrilla Warfare
The Explosives Expert
Gaëtan joins the Maquis. He becomes an expert in bombs. He derails trains and blows up depots.
The Weapons Drop
Isabelle delivers a coded message: "Long sobs of autumn violins." It signals a major operation. Gaëtan must leave immediately.
The Last Goodbye
They make love in his tent. He promises to find her after the war. She holds onto that promise.
Reunion at Le Jardin

Love Conquers All
The Search
After the war, Gaëtan searches for Isabelle. He finds her at Le Jardin, dying from typhus.
The Declaration
He tells her he loves her. He has always loved her. She dies in his arms, at peace.
The Legacy
Gaëtan names his daughter Isabelle. He never forgets the Nightingale.
